Hot weather prompts fire warning

FIREFIGHTERS issued a weather warning after attending an arson attack near football pitches.

Crews were called to Sandy Lane, Thurcroft, on Tuesday (16) night where 60 sq metres of grass was on fire.

A fire service spokesman said: “We’ve had a continuous period of warm weather now and the grass is extremely dry.

“Even small fires, accidental or deliberate, can turn into much larger ones very quickly.

“We would ask people to be very careful when discarding cigarettes, barbecues and other items around grassland. Even glass bottles can magnify the Sun’s rays and cause a fire.”
