Sanctuary pleads for help to rehome abandoned pets

THORNBERRY Animal Sanctuary is making a desperate plea for animal lovers to adopt pets to help stop it bursting at the seams.

The sanctuary says it is increasingly under pressure as the number of pets needing new homes rises, as the number of potential pet adopters falls.

Fund-raiser and event co-ordinator Sarah Froggatt said: “For much of 2011, ten phone calls each day have been are requests for help in re-homing a pet.

“Sadly, as anyone who visits us will know, we have limited spaces available, and with a decline in pets being adopted out the waiting lists get longer.

“This has obviously pushed some people too far and, over the last three weeks, dogs and cats have been dumped at our gates at all hours of the day and night.

“We squeeze these frightened animals in, while struggling to help others and dog wardens, who call with dogs whose days in the pounds are up.

“It gets harder every day.

“If anyone wants to take a pet into their lives, visit Thornberry and there is a chance you will find a loving family companion. You will also be helping that rescue save another life.”
