Fires dealt with through strike

CONTINGENCY fire crews attended incidents around the borough this weekend as firefighters four day strike took hold.

There were deliberate fires dealt with, one was on Ickles Way in Templeborough at 11pm on Sunday.

A small incident crew attended to find a bush on fire and were at the scene for 20 minutes.

The second deliberate blaze was in the cellar of a terraced house on Devonshire Street in Masbrough at 4pm on Saturday.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said no one was in the property at the time.

He added: “Two fire engines attended, they went in with breathing apparatus, and put out the fire using a hose reel and were at the scene for an hour.”

A car on the M1 between junctions 33 and 34 near Catcliffe accidentally caught fire at 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

The vehicle was well alight and the spokesman said it was due to an engine fault, the incident was dealt with in 40 minutes.

Earlier in the day the contingency crew was called to a property on Hollowgate at 1pm when a chip pan caught fire.

The blaze was out when the crew arrived and the man was unhurt, but officers spent an hour ventilating the man’s home.

Firefighters strike action began on October 31 at 6pm in a continuing row over pensions.

The strike ends on the evening before Guy Fawkes’ Night.
