Council consult on plans for former swimming pool

TIME is running out for residents to have their say on plans for a new car wash at the site of a former swimming pool.

An application for a hand car wash and valeting business at the site where Wath Swimming Baths previously stood will be considered next month but comments have to be submitted to Rotherham Borough Council by next Wednesday (6).

Several residents have already complained about the possibility of extra traffic, run-off of chemicals used in car cleaning, while another said Wath was being “cannabalised by commerce and greed” as the site had previously been used for recreation.

Others pointed out that there were already several car washes in the area

The pool was mothballed as part of borough council’s PFI plans to build four new super-pools, including one on Moor Road in Wath, and went up for auction in 2010.

The council said at the time that the terms of the PFI deal meant the old pool building could not be reopened as it would be in competition with the new facility.

The former swimming pool was finally pulled down last year after a long period of failing victim to vandals.

The application, by Suat Uyanik of Barnsley, is expected to be considered on June 3.
