A sign of the past at new street

HISTORIAN Douglas Wydell is helping keep the memory of lost buildings alive by helping name a street to commemorate them.

Mr Wydell, of Gordon Drive in Brampton Bierlow, has teamed up with a developer to mark the old Maltings buildings on Doncaster Road, Wath-on-Dearne.

He has worked with Rotherham-based Eton Construction and Rotherham Borough Council to name a street Maltings Court on a development of five luxury detached houses which are being built on the site.

Mr Wydell – who has undertaken historical research in Wath-on-Dearne and West Melton – has already named three other streets in the past and has had three more approved by the council.

Maltings Court is on the site of the old Maltings which was one of two such establishments owned by well-known maltsters and brewers Whitworth – Son and Nephew who operated between 1868 and 1958.

Mr Wydell said: “This new development of five luxury detached houses will be built in the grounds of the old Maltings.

“The Maltings were built around 1870 and were later used by smaller businesses until their demolition.”

The current development on the site is the second phase of work.
