POLICE found a cannabis plantation in a Rotherham town centre house gutted by fire.

Firefighters attended the blaze on Hollowgate, just off Wellgate, at 2.52pm on Friday.

Staff wearing breathing apparatus confirmed that there was no-one inside, before putting out the blaze from an aerial ladder platform.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue recorded the fire as being caused accidentally.

But a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said today that a cannabis farm was involved.

She added: "A cannabis set-up was discovered in the roof space. The fire spread to a neighbouring property, causing damage.

"Enquiries are now ongoing."
