A TEENAGER is in hospital in a critical condition after he was stabbed in Rotherham town centre overnight.

Officers were sent to All Saints' Square at 10.15pm yesterday after receiving a report that an 18-year-old man had been attacked.

A police cordon has remained in place throughout this morning, with six police cars stationed in the area.

A spokeswoman said that on arriving at the scene last night, police had discovered that a woman, also aged 18, had been assaulted and robbed.

"The man was taken to hospital with a stab wound to his abdomen," she said.

"He remains in a critical but stable condition.

"The woman at the scene did not require medical treatment.

"No arrests have been made at this time." 

Det Insp Nina Jackson said: "We believe that there were a series of confrontations outside the transport interchange and McDonalds before the victim was injured in All Saints' Square.

"Witnesses reported seeing around three men leaving the scene and enquiries to indentify them are progressing quickly."

Det Insp Jackson added that officers were currently reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses. 

She said: "I am urging anyone who has information about what happened to please contact us.

"We know there were a number of people in the area at the time who might have seen something.

"If you have received information that could help us trace the offenders, we'd like to hear from you."
