South Yorkshire Police to be boosted by 79 new recruits

AN EXTRA 79 police officers will be recruited by South Yorkshire Police by 2024 — funded through further financial savings, the force has announced.

Some 68 will join this financial year, 55 of whom are being funded by the 14 per cent precept rise approved in spring.

Seventy-three more will be added thanks to the cuts to police community support officers.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson announced that a further 79 PCs will join by 2024 through “further efficiency savings”.

He said: “We know people want to see more officers in South Yorkshire, and we’re pleased to be able to deliver this.

“This is great news for the force but, most importantly, this is great news for the residents of South Yorkshire.

“By adding these roles we will be better equipped to address the issues which cause the most concern to local people, and we’ll also be bringing excellent employment opportunities.

“This recruitment drive is a key part of our continuous development.

“Our inspectorate has identified South Yorkshire Police as the most improved force in 2017, again in 2018 and we’re absolutely committed to achieving this in 2019.

“We look forward to welcoming our new recruits to join us on our journey to outstanding.”

More than 500 PCs will be recruited by 2024 once retirements are taken into account, the force says.

Detailed transition arrangements were being drawn up, Mr Watson told Monday’s (2) regional police and crime panel meeting.
