Six arrests from police's Operation Scorpion action day in Rotherham

ARRESTS were made for offences linked to drugs and burglaries as police carried out a day of action under Operation Scorpion.

Specialist teams linked up with neighbourhood officers for the activities across Rotherham and the wider area last Wednesday.

A man linked with supply of drugs was stopped in a silver VW Golf on Mangham Road. The 22-year-old was held after being found in possession of class A and B substances.

Warrants were also held on Cranworth Road and Bethal Road in Eastwood.

Cannabis growing equipment was found at the former, with an actual grow at the latter.

Meanwhile, a black Audi A3 fled from near another house search, on Meadowhall Road, and was found abandoned. It is thought to have been used in a series of house burglaries.

A stolen Hyundai I30N on cloned plates was also found and recovered.

In total, seven vehicles — including three stolen — were seized as part of the operation, at a value of £94,000.

Safety camera partnerships established a new enforcement location on Doncaster Road in Thrybergh following concerns about road safety.

Thirty-nine of the day’s 81 motoring offences were at the location, which had been flagged as a concern by neighbourhood officers.

Elsewhere, the off-road bike team patrolled Thrybergh, Silverwood, Maltby, Thurcroft and Dinnington — recording 27 interactions with riders relating to illegal motorcycles.

Field intelligence officer Tim Scothern, from the force’s specialist crime services unit, said: “This was, again, a very successful day of action.

“We prioritised detection and disruption of criminal behaviour, and showed the communities through high visibility policing that we continue to sustain public protection and deny criminals the use of the roads.”

The six arrests included a wanted man (29) who had failed to attend court for traffic and weapons offences.

Rotherham Chief Insp Nat Gilmour added: “This was a really productive day. It was really good to have all the operational support units and investigations resources working together as a pack with district resources to tackle issues.

“I look forward to the next time Op Scorpion comes to the streets of Rotherham.”
