Saturday brawl in Rotherham town centre 'not football-related'

AN ASSAULT in Rotherham town centre on Saturday was not related to football, police have said.

Five people arrested after the incident, which left a man with life-threatening injuries, have been released under investigation.

Officers were called to reports of an incident on Bridgegate at about 4.30pm.

A 38-year-old man was treated by air ambulance paramedics and later taken to hospital by ambulance.

He was still in a critical condition yesterday, police said.

Det Chief Insp Simon Palmer said investigations were ongoing, adding: “We are still establishing the circumstances around this incident. 

“There is some speculation online that this is linked to local football related rivalries. However at this time we do not believe this to be the case.”

Five people were arrested at the scene on suspicion of GBH with intent and public order offences.

Witnesses and anyone with information are urged to call 101 quoting incident 675 of Saturday, March 9.

A previous report said police had been called to an incident outside The County pub.  A spokesman for Amber Taverns, owners of The County, stated that the while the incident was in Bridgegate, where the County is located, the pub was not directly involved, apart from staff having alerted emergency services to the incident and given first aid to the injured man.
