Charles Lunn (81) received a call from someone claiming to represent HM Revenue and Customs at 11am on Monday.
The female caller said criminal charges of fraud were being laid against him and demanded personal details for identification.

“I know scams are quite common these days, but this is a new one on me,” he said.
“This woman asked me to confirm my name and address, which I did.
“But when she asked for my national insurance number, I asked her to tell me more about these charges. When I did that, the phone went dead.”
He added: “Older people need to be aware of this, because calls from HMRC could frighten them.
“If I was more gullible, I could have given out all sorts of personal details.”
