Figures reveal two in three police stop and searches turn up nothing

TWO in three stop searches by South Yorkshire Police turn up nothing and lead to no further action, figures show.

Between April and November 2018, the force carried out 2,278 such checks and made 393 arrests.

There were also 118 court summons issued and 212 cases were dealt with by fine, caution or community resolution.

The most common reason for the searches are to look for stolen goods, drugs and firearms.

A report to police commissioner Dr Alan Billings said: “Effectively, we find the items sought in 27 per cent of stop searches. We are keen to increase our effectiveness of stop and search.”
