Writers wanted for Mexborough group

BUDDING writers are being sought to join a creative group aimed at developing their talents.

Write on Mexborough! will hold its first session on September 24 and aims to let participants work on a project of their choice over ten sessions.

The initiative will be free but membership will be limited to 14 people.

The group will meet at the Mexborough Resource Centre on Dolcliffe Road and there will be a mixture of taught sessions, masterclasses by invited published authors and performance and workshop sessions.

The course will build up to a performance of the group’s work.

The initiative has been put together by novelist and poet Steve Ely who recently published a major new book about the poet Ted Hughes, who lived in Mexborough for much of his youth.

Write On Mexborough! is part of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Anyone interested in joining Write On Mexborough! should email Mr Ely at [email protected] by September 11 with their name, address and telephone number, a paragraph about their writing experience and ambitions, and a paragraph about the project they would like to work on.

Steve Ely said: “This is the second iteration of Write On Mexborough! which has grown out of the third aim of the Ted Hughes Project (South Yorkshire) to develop poetry, writing and art in Mexborough and the wider Don and Dearne valleys.

“The first group created a poetry pamphlet which was distributed free at the Ted Hughes Poetry Festival and performed their work at the Festival, as well as producing some sterling work through the year.”
