MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL PERSON OF THE YEAR: Maltby Town Council held its Civic Service on Sunday May 22 where the presentation took place for Maltby Town Council Person Of The Year. The presentation was made by the Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Lyndsay Pitchley and Chair of Maltby Town Council, Cllr Jon Carratt. Bevan Crescent/Age UK Over 60s Group were nominated by Mrs Bromilow. The Reason for Nomination - Bevan Crescent Over 60s Group are a small group of aged persons who meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings who love to chat to each other, enjoy quizzes, sing-songs and have refreshments. The majority have lived in Maltby all their lives and through the group try to help those who are less fortunate and lonely. The second nominee was Mrs Sarah McCreton who was nominated by Helena Muller, chief executive of Lost Chord. Reason for Nomination - Sarah has been with Lost Chord for seven years and has been an exemplary volunteer. She has always given her time without questions or expenses. She has enormous empathy with the dementia client group and because of that has achieved some amazing responses from people who often have no response to anything else. The winner was Bevan Crescent/Age UK Over 60s Group.

MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL YOUNG PERSON OF THE YEAR: Also at the Civic Service the presentation for Maltby Town Council Young Person Of The Year was made. The presentation was made by the Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Lyndsay Pitchley and Chair of Maltby Town Council, Cllr Jon Carratt. Francesca Riley was nominated by Amanda Jenkins of Maltby Academy. Reason for Nomination - Francesca has volunteered countless hours with local charitable organisations and sports teams over a number of years. She currently commits her time to engaging young people at Bluebell Wood Hospice. She is selfless, always putting others before herself. Abbie Platt, Ryan Hart and Charlie Hart were nominated by Mr Rob Mulvey. Reason for Nomination - The three young people named regularly support fund-raising and extra-curricular events at Maltby Hilltop Special School. They volunteer in their own time during the evenings and weekends to support the monthly school disco, the Christmas and Summer fair, the ‘S’ Factor and other events. Without their continued support, the events would not be as successful as they are. Joseph Law was nominated by Janet Law. Reason for Nomination - Joseph is an inspiration to others. He has proven that with work and the correct diet you can achieve your goal. Joseph weighed in at 30 stones at the start and in 12 months has lost over half his body weight. In February he set up a ‘go fund page’ to help raise money for his father who was seriously ill in a hospital in Thailand. St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Maltby was nominated by Mr Bill Spilsbury. Reason for Nomination - The children at St Mary’s School have combined to raise a massive £2,200 which will be equally divided between Bluebell Wood and Rotherham Hospice. On each Friday during Lent the children carried out a different activity. They paid £1 for each activity which allowed them to take part. The activities included bring and buy sale, book character dress-up day, and a sponsored run/walk. Leahna Gerakis Nominated by Andrea Liversidge. Reason for Nomination - For giving up her time every week to support the local Scout Group. She regularly organises her section and gives up her weekends to support the Beaver Leader with overnight stay. The winners of Maltby Town Council Young Person Of The Year were Abbie Platt, Ryan Hart and Charlie Hart.

MALTBY ACADEMY: Maltby Town Council Civic Service - Maltby Academy students were nominated for the Maltby Town Council Young Person of the Year. They were Francesca Riley, Joseph Law, Ryan Hart and Charlie Hart. They were all recognised with a certificate presented to them by the Mayor but the winners were Ryan Hart and Charlie Hart for their regular support with fundraising events and extra-curricular events at Hilltop Special School. This voluntary work is in their own time during evenings and weekends. Secret Life of Birds - The exciting Secret Life of Birds project continues at Maltby Academy and the project group are looking forward to joining the Summer Science Exhibition at the Royal Society in London this July. The exhibition is made up of 22 exhibits, with The Secret Life of Birds being one of the exhibits. Other exhibits include projects by universities and scientists and include cutting edge science and research projects. Rocket Seeds from Space - The Science team along with a group of Year 7 students have managed to secure some ‘rocket seeds’ that were launched into space, stored in microgravity by Tim Peake (the first British ESA astronaut) and have now returned to Earth. The seeds have been planted and are now in their fourth week of growth. So far there are no obvious differences between the seeds that have been to space and returned and those seeds that didn’t go. RSC Top of the Bench Chemistry Quiz - Following on from their recent success at the regional RSC Top of the Bench Chemistry Quiz, Morgan Edwards, Nathan Shaw, Matt Gill and Bethany Hunt went to Loughborough University with 31 other schools who had won the regional heats too. They had to sit a written exam and take part in a 2.5 hour lab session where they had to problem solve as a team to work out a number of things. They also took part in a debate where post doc students presented their research and the students had to decide which project was worth investing in. And the result! The MA team came 12 in the country. For more news from Maltby Academy, visit the website www.maltbyacademy.com.
