DAN REMEMBERED: Members of Bawtry Cricket Club remembered their late playing colleague Daniel Mothersdale, who died aged 21 in 2010, when they contested their sixth annual memorial winter match at the Memorial Sports Ground, South Parade on December 28. Instead of playing cricket they played football. The keenly fought match, that was played in wet and wintry conditions, saw a big turnout of around 40 male and female Bawtry Cricket Club players of all ages. The event raised money for the Papyrus charity which is dedicated to the prevention of young suicides.

GROUNDED ICON: Bawtry townsfolk will miss seeing the iconic Avro Vulcan XH558 flying above them this year. The past 12 months has been the eighth and final display season of the 55-year-old bomber named Spirit of Great Britain that has flown from its home at Robin Hood Airport. But aircraft enthuisasts will still be able to see the plane in its Cold War hanger at the former RAF Finningley airbase. The aircraft will be at the heart of activities in its hanger and it will continue to inspire generations of engineers and aviators. It will be an Aviation Skills Academy to train young people for careers in aviation and a Heritage Centre to bring enthusiasts close to XH558 and other aircraft as well as also acting as a new national technology centre for schools and families and other groups. Members of the public will still be able to enjoy tours of XH558 and the Cold War Collection. www.vulcantothesky.org.
