Vote for your favourite Christmas film

It’s Christmas evening, the family are well fed, well watered and grandad is asleep in the arm chair snoring.

As the day we wait all year for is almost over, you want some light entertainment and a festive film is the perfect option.

That is why, here at the Rotherham Advertiser, we thought we would get together a list of ten of the most celebrated Christmas films in modern history, and there’s some crackers!

1 It’s  A  Wonderful   Life (1946)

Frank Capra’s five-time Oscar nominated drama is based on the original story The Greatest Gift. It is written by Phillip Van Doren Stern and is revived every year just in time for the festivities.

Fans of this movie will get to see the story 60 years on, when it hits our screens in 2015.

2 The  Muppets Christmas Carol (1993)

All your favourite Muppet characters come together for this remake of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Throw in the mix British acting legend Michael Caine as the grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge and this Christmas classic is on to a winner.

Kermit the Frog takes the role of Bob Cratchet, while Gonzo supplies the voiceover as the narrator.

3 Home Alone (1990)

You never hear someone say: “I’ve never seen Home Alone.”

There’s a good reason for that, because kids all around the globe wish that this story happened to them.

A young, care-free Macaulay Culkin is left at home by his parents as the whole family take a festive trip away, but when two burglars try to get in the house the eight-year-old comes up with some fairly creative ways of scaring them off.

4 Scrooged (1988)

If a film has Bill Murray in, then you know it is going to be decent.

That is certainly the case in Scrooged where Murray is visited by ghosts of his past, present and future. Sounds familiar right? Think again, there’s a modern twist to this Christmas hit.

5 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

From the man who brought us Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns, this stop motion fantasy film shows off Tim Burton’s skill for imaginative storytelling. Based in the fictional setting of Halloween Town, the ghosts and ghouls who occupy it get excited at the idea of turning their settlement into a more festive placed named Christmas Town.

6 Miracle On 34th Street (1994)

This festive film is a story that questions the existence of the mythical persona of Santa Claus and includes legendary actor Richard Attenborough in the role of Kris Kringle.

A remake of the 1947 original, this is a festive staple in many households.

7 Elf  (2003)

Will Ferrell is arguably the comic actor of his generation and in this modern Christmas hit he steps into the oversized shoes of Buddy the Elf. It soon becomes clear that Buddy doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of Santa’s little helpers.

8 Die Hard (1988)

Who wouldn’t want to watch Bruce Willis doing what he does best at Christmas?

The action hero takes on terrorists but with a festive twist, a Christmas party in an office block is under threat.

Can the foul mouthed action man save the day?

9 The Snowman (1982)

Originally a very popular children’s book by author Raymond Briggs, The Snowman was adapted into a 26 minute film by Dianne Jackson  for Channel Four.

10 Gremline (1984)

Producer Steven Spielberg tells a story about what can happen when Christmas presents go wrong after a young boy receives a pet but breaks three simple rules, causing havoc on his unsuspecting neighbourhood.
