Village all set for brass festival event

NINE bands will be taking part in this year’s Whiston Festival of Brass on July 2.

Each band will be marching around the village and giving a 25 minute performance as they are judged in the popular contest.

The bands taking part this year are Dronfield (Genquip), Chapeltown Silver Prize, Shirland Miners Welfare, Loxley Silver, Maltby Miners Welfare, Thurlstone Brass, Strata, Frickley South Elmsall and Stannington.

The Youth Training Band contest will see entries by Lion Junior Brass, Rother Vale Community, Rotherham Schools and Shirland Training.

The village will also host a number of family attractions during the event including children’s rides and a fun fair.

The festival attracts around 5,000 visitors a year.

The event is due to kick off at noon.
