The sky's the limit for Clifton Park stargazers

FAMILIES are urged to get together to see stars this weekend as part of a nationwide project.

Clifton Park is to hold an evening of astronomy as part of the BBCs Stargazing Live campaign on Sunday, January 29.

The Planets in the Park event at Clifton is being jointly organised by the Friends of Clifton Park and the Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society.

The event will be held in the walled garden from 5pm and will finish at approximately 9pm.

Activities will include the chance to use the society's high powered telescopes and a presentation held by the society in the multi-function room.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own telescopes and the society will be happy to give advice on how to use them.

Organisers are hoping for a clear sky, but are confident that, whatever the weather, Venus, Jupiter and the Moon will be visible.

This is the first time the Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society have held an event in the town centre, although they have been hosting educational evenings for many years.

Chairman of the Friends of Clifton Park, Elaine Humphries, said: “I’ve been to the observatory to watch events held by the society before, and they are always very good.

“They are very excited because this is their first event in town.

“I’d advise everybody to wrap up warm because it is looking like it is going to be a cold evening.”

The event is free of charge but donations are welcome, all proceeds will go to the Clifton Park World War Two memorial fund.

No booking is required and refreshments will be available.
