Swinton's history recalled in new book

HUNDREDS of people gather in Swinton to celebrate being part of the Commonwealth — shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.

The striking shot — showing the village’s Empire Day event — is part of Swinton Pictorial, which traces the history of the place through photos.

It was compiled by local history authors Ken Wyatt and Giles Brearley and features more than 200 images.

Ken said: “It might be just the solution if you’re stuck for a Christmas present with a real South Yorkshire feel. We hope there is something of interest for everyone.

“Many of the photos in the book have never been seen in the public domain before as they have been donated by people with local connections.”

The book is the latest in a series by the pair celebrating Swinton’s past. The pictures are grouped into themes including working life, sport, transport and war.

The book will be launched next at Swinton’s Ring O Bells pub next Wednesday  at 7pm.

Giles said: “We would like to thank the many local residents who have kindly shared their wonderful photos and allowed publication.

“Also thanks to everyone who has helped, especially Swinton Heritage researcher Ron James who has been tireless with his detective work.

“We are always interested in obtaining further material for possible future publications if anyone would like to contact us.”

The book will also be available from local outlets including Brearley Accountants, Bridge Street, and from the Swinton Heritage website.
