Ron’s wheels of steel at charity Motown night

A RETIRED steel worker delved into his 7,000-strong record collection to DJ at a charity Motown and soul night.

Former engineer Ron Stanley stepped up to the decks at Wickersley Working Men’s Social Club in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity.

More than 400 people joined in the fun with anthems from the 60s, 70s and 80s to raise more than £800 for the cause.

“It’s a good cause,” said Ron. “It’s awful for anyone to be in hospital over Christmas, but it’s even worse if they’re babies and children.

“So I said let’s dig deep, put your hands in your pockets and let’s raise some money for poorly kids.”

Inspiration for the event came from former Rotherham soul club Charade, which Ron and friends used to attend in the 60s and 70s.

Ron said: “We’ve found that there’s a rebirth of Motown and soul. It’s making a comeback as people remember the music and I’m finding that you get people coming with their children because their children remember the music from their childhood.”

The Children's Hospital Charity director David Vernon-Edwards said: “It’s great to see our supporters being so creative with their fundraising.

“Thanks to people like Ron and his friends and family, we can continue to be at the forefront of paediatric care.”
