Roger misses out on New York anthem honours

MILLERS-mad Roger Brooks has lost out in the race to be the voice of Rotherham United’s new stadium.

Roger, who lives in Letwell, rewrote the Frank Sinatra classic New York, New York and had hoped his efforts would become the anthem for the Millers’ new stadium.

He even got permission for EMI Records  to use the tune, but his ditty has been pipped at the post by another version of the song recorded by Rotherham band The Foundry.

Their version has been adopted by the club and it has already become a musical fixture at the club’s home games.

Roger lived a stone’s throw from Millmoor as a boy — on Holmes Lane, Holmes — and attended games alongside his father as a boy.

He wanted to mark the opening of the 12,000-seat New York Stadium with a fitting tune.

The former radio station boss, Advertiser reporter and frontman for one-time clubland hit The Stereos said: “It would have been great to perform it at the new ground or hear the fans sing it, but perhaps that’s not to be.”

Roger's lyrics to the classic tune go like this:

Start spreadin' the news

We're back here to stay

We'll make a brand new start of it

In our New York

Come back to our roots

Been too long away

But now we're back in Rotherham

In our New York

We had four seasons

In a city made of steel

But now we're back here we've got

That old Millmoor feel

The Tivoli end

Or Premiership friends

Will all be welcome here again

To our New York

We know we'll make it here

Come on, from far and near

Come on, come to

New York, New York

We've had some good times

Been to Wembley, old and new

But now we're back here to stay

Here's what we say

We'll hit the top

Startin' to-day

Old memories stir

New hope's in the air

We're gonna top the league again

In our New York

With champagne, Coke or beer

Come on and raise a cheer

A toast to new

New York, New York

New York!
