Rawmarsh's Great Get-Together unites the community

RESIDENTS were treated to a day of activities and fun by a community centre celebrating a £215,000 lottery windfall.

The High Street Centre in Rawmarsh hosted the Great Get-Together event as part of its Stronger Together project, which designed by the people who currently use the centre to extend their work and help even local people to connect with their community.

The project was set up following a successful bid for £215,000 to be spent by the High Street Centre over a four-year period.

Activities and demonstrations ran throughout the day, including arts and crafts, tai chi and face painting.

There was also a performance by the young musicians, and a display of old photos.

“The national Great Get-Together, inspired by the late MP Jo Cox, is all about bringing communities together to celebrate everything they have in common,” said project co-ordinator Nicola Sharpe.

“Our event was based on exactly the same principles, and we're delighted that we were able to welcome so many people to our centre, across a wide range of ages.

“Some wanted to get involved, some wanted to meet up with friends, and others just wanted a chat.

“On the day, we recruited people to a walking group, adult art group and volunteers to litter pick and several people committed to start new fitness activities.”
