*A bowling club is hoping to jack up its finances after council chiefs pulled the plug on funding.

Barkers Park Bowling Club is holding an outdoor table top sale tomorrow between noon and 4pm at the Bowling Green, Barkers Park, Redscope Crescent, Kimberworth Park.

It comes after clubs across the borough were dealt the hammer blow that the borough council would no longer fund green maintenances, leaving the amateurs in need of new sources of income.

To book a pitch for tomorrow’s sale, contact the club secretary on 01709 555192 or call at the club. Refreshments will be available.

*A barrowload of fun is in store next week as one of Rotherham’s most eccentric events makes a welcome return.

The village of Braithwell will be holding its annual wheelbarrow races from 6pm next Thursday, with organisers welcoming an increasing number of younger racers including primary school children.

Co-organiser Andrew Humphries said: “This puts a lie to the fact that they just don’t do this kind of activity anymore, preferring to sit in front of a computer screen playing video games, etc.

“There is also the very keenly contested adult race which takes in a two-and-a-half mile course, including the drinking of half a pint of beer at the halfway marker — The Plough at Micklebring.
