DISCOUNT chain Poundland is opening its biggest Yorkshire store in Rotherham tomorrow in a former Marks & Spencer’s.

The “super-sized” 18,500 sq ft store will open at Parkgate Shopping in the unit last used by M&S, who vacated the premises in 2019.

Poundland — who currently operate a smaller unit on the other side of the park — said they would create ten new jobs on top of the 29 current staff as a result of the move.

Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We love being in Rotherham — in fact, we’ve been here for over ten years and we know how much locals love their Poundland.

“That’s why we wanted to open an even bigger and better store – our largest in Yorkshire.

“The size of the store means there’s more of our amazing value under one roof across more categories than ever before.

“Where we’ve opened stores of this scale in other areas, they have wowed customers and we’re thrilled that Rotherham will be one of the first locations in the UK to have one of our large ‘destination’ stores bringing shoppers from across Yorkshire.

"What’s more customers won’t have to travel far as we are on the same retail park. We really can’t wait to open the doors on Friday.”

M&S’s decision to close the unit was the latest step in their withdrawal from central Rotherham, having previously pulled out of the town centre. It left shoppers with a choice of Meadowhall or Cortonwood for their next closest branch, but the latter is food-only.

Formerly Discount UK and Hitchens, M&S’ former College Street store in the town centre is now operated by another discount retailer, One Below.
