My Pierrot Dolls' sell-out comeback performance at Chantry Brewery Tap leaves fans wanting more

IT was supposed to be for one night only...

But My Pierrot Dolls front man Ivor Hillman pledged the reformed band will be back after they performed for a sell-out crowd at Chantry Brewery tap.

The four-piece, who enjoyed success during the early 1980s New Romantic craze, hadn’t appeared together on stage for more than 40 years but tickets were snapped up for their comeback.

And Ivor admitted: “There are definitely going to be more in the pipeline.

“The band are all up for it.

“Baz has been performing but the other two have not really been on a stage. Ian got a buzz as it’s something he’s wanted to do for so long.

“If we do another gig, I’d like to do some of the older stuff.”

The Dolls performed 15 songs from their extensive back catalogue, plus a cover of I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls.

And there was a special treat for fans of the early 80s Rotherham scene with a guest appearance from ex-Vision keyboard player Andy Beaumont, who joined the band on stage for a rendition of Vision’s hit song Lucifers Friend.

Ivor said the band were due to meet up this week to decide the way forward but he was delighted with how the March 4 show had gone.

“On the final rehearsal it wasn’t sounding great – maybe it was a bit of nerves or apprehension, with people wondering: ‘Can we do it, will it work?’” he said.

“We put in one or two extra songs that we had not rehearsed before, too, but on the night, everything just seemed to click. Maybe it was the adrenaline.”

Ivor, who also performs in a duo called Echo Beach, said the audience had also lapped up the Chantry night, adding: “The atmosphere was brilliant.

“We were walking around in the crowd before the show and there were a lot of people we had not seen for years coming up and speaking to us.

“One couple said it was their 40th anniversary this year and they had met at a My Pierrot Dolls gig.

“People were very pleased to see us back — it brought back memories for them.

“We had people from Mansfield, Chesterfield and even Scotland.”

“One couple had come from Wolverhampton who had seen old videos online but never seen us live.”

As well as band T-shirts, of which 30 were snapped up on the night, fans may soon have another My Pierrot Dolls souvenir to cherish.

“Steve (Ellis) from Orion Studios recorded the gig and will mix it for us so we can do a live vinyl LP and CD,” said Ivor.

With the buzz of a sellout gig still fresh in the memory, Ivor is looking forward to the band performing together again.

“When I do Echo Beach, it is a job like any job — I’m doing it to pay my mortgage,” he said.

“But with My Pierrot Dolls it is not about money, it’s about making memories and enjoying it.

“I’m proud of all the songs we’ve written.”
