Maltby Memorial thanks to all

ON behalf of Maltby Miners Memorial Community Group, I would like to thank the residents and ex-residents of Maltby for their fantastic support and participation during the unveiling memorial service that took place on Limekiln Lane on Tuesday July 28.

As you are aware the memorial is dedicated to the memory of the 27 miners that died in the 1923 explosion.

Lord Scarbrough performed the unveiling and the event was led by the Rev Margaret Caunt.

I was gob-smacked at the number of people that attended the event, some of whom had travelled vast distances to be with us.

It was particularly nice to see the local schoolchildren and members of the Youth Council there and joining the local councils, VIPs and relatives of the victims in the laying of floral tributes.

There are many people to thank: Hargreaves, Maltby Brass Band, Maltby Sword Dancers, Hope Construction, Steve Winks Memorials, Ash and Paul Oliver, Maltby Miners Welfare, Sizzlers — the list is endless.

However, the biggest vote of thanks must go to you, the people of Maltby. Without your continued support the dreams that we have will not become reality.

To that end I urge you to continue with your much valued support. As most of you are well aware, the memorial on Limekiln Lane is only a beginning. We are planning to build a larger memorial on the High Street that will be dedicated to all the people who have worked at Maltby Colliery throughout its life.

This unfortunately does not come free. We have approached various organisations in order to secure funding, and we will continue to arrange fundraising events in Maltby. Please keep your eyes peeled for news of these events and continue with your much-needed support.
