Help keep our children safe

ROAD safety heroes are wanted from among parents in a new bid to protect children.

The Safer Roads Partnership is calling on parents to help improve their children’s safety when travelling on the county’s roads.

The call comes as part of Child Safety Week, which runs until today.

Parents and carers are being asked to take simple steps to keep children safer and avoid them getting hurt.

Parents can be a Road Safety Hero by setting a good example and passing on some basic road safety messages, such as teaching children to use the Green Cross Code and making sure they wear something bright and reflective to help them be seen by other road users.

Katrina Phillips, chief executive at the Child Accident Prevention Trust, the national charity that runs Child Safety Week said: “Our message for the week is you don’t need to be superhuman to be a Road Safety Hero.

“Putting your coffee cup out of reach of small hands, keeping painkillers and cleaning things stored safely away, practising road safety with your children while you’re out walking — these small things all add up to children who are protected from serious harm.”
