Father and daughter film-making duo win four awards for new short comedy: The World According to Barry the Bauble

AWARD-winning father and daughter film-makers Dean and Rebecca Sills have teamed up on a new project.

After major success with a number of wildlife films and western movie A Dollar To Die For, Rebecca has cast her dad as a talking Christmas tree decoration in short comedy The World According to Barry the Bauble.

Rebecca, of Bolton on Dearne, is studying film-making at Sheffield University for her masters degree and shot the movie as part of her course work.

The 24-year-old has already submitted it into various competitions and won four awards, including Best Micro Short film at the Palm Island International Film Festival in Dubai and Best Children’s Short Film at the Indo-Singapore International Film Festival.

The film, shot over one day in December, sees Dean play a talking decoration who is discussing Christmas and the fact people put their Christmas trees up far too early.

It also looks at the cost of living, the strikes and the last World Cup, plus the “annoying kid” from the Christmas classic The Polar Express.

Rebecca, who has now submitted the film into BAFTA qualifying festivals and others in Germany and the USA, used the process to display a number of visual effects on screen, including a talking reindeer which she helps bring to life.

She said: “As a filmmaker, I wanted to achieve a film which looks at the positives and the negatives of life.

“I’m thrilled to win several awards so early on after releasing it but feel it will do much better in the autumn and next winter when more film festivals open up for seasonal films.

“It was also fun to turn my dad into a bauble and stick him on the Christmas tree.”
