Drive to raise deaf awareness

A GROUP for the deaf and their families is demanding “equality in communication for all” as it gears up for an annual publicity drive.

Rotherham Deaf Futures Group is hosting a drop-in session during Deaf Awareness Week between May 19 and May 25.

The group are organising a Deaf Futures stall outside Riverside House on Main Street in Rotherham between 10am and 2pm on Friday, May 23.

There will be quizzes, balloons, free pens and prizes up for grabs.

Rotherham Deaf Futures is a tenants and residents group run by and for the deaf community.

As well as lobbying and campaigning for better services for deaf people, the group organises events, meetings and training for all users of British Sign Language in Rotherham.

Rotherham Deaf Futures is keen to get more active members and would also welcome support or sponsorship from local business to enable them become more active in support of deaf rights.

One in six people in the UK that are deaf or hard of hearing.

The group is supported by the Rotherham Federation of Tenants and Residents (RotherFed) who will also be at the stall as well as a British Sign Language interpreter.

Kim Addy, treasurer of the group said: “Rotherham Deaf Futures are there for all deaf people.

“Come and support us outside Riverside House during Deaf Awareness week.”
