Annual summer fayre returns to Letwell

ONE of Rotherham’s most historic villages hosts its annual summer fayre next weekend — promising to entertain visitors with the usual mix of traditional family fun and games.

The festival at Letwell — which has been held every July for the last 60 years — kicks off at 1pm next Saturday, with Thurcroft Brass Band playing throughout the afternoon on the main village street.

Hawks and falcons feature among the attractions, and should be flying free weather permitting.

An exhibition of World War Two vehicles and memorabilia will also be on display.

Heartsease Country Dancing Team return to the village with the Jolly Beggars folk band.

Woodlouse racing, which proved an unlikely hit last year, makes another appearance at the show.

Pot smashing, splat the rat, and the coconut shy are also part of the programme.

Members of the WI will be serving home made teas in the village hall all through the afternoon.

Organisers say the show will go ahead whatever the weather.

A spokesman said: “The weather's not got in the way for 60 odd years, and it won’t do now.”

Proceeds from the event go to support the village’s 14th Century Grade II*-listed church St Peter's.
