AN ACTING legend whose astonishing story started in Mexborough has been lined up to make a hotly-anticipated homecoming later in the year.

And booming-voiced film star-turned-mountaineer and raconteur Brian Blessed has already proved so popular with folk in his hometown that the “An Audience With...” event booked in for October 27 at the Empress Building in Mexborough has sold out.

It means a second date has been added by event organisers on October 26.

In between the two appearances, Brian will unveil a plaque celebrating local theatre director Harry Dobson, the man who set him on the road to stardom.

He is being brought “back home” thanks to historian Giles Brearley, Empress Building owner Jason Mace and events company boss Craig Mastrototaro.

Brian said: “I am overjoyed to be returning to my beloved hometown of Mexborough, where my journey as an actor began.

“It fills my heart with immense pride to unveil a plaque honouring the incredible Harry Dobson, who discovered my talents and nurtured my passion for the stage.

“Mexborough holds a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to share this unforgettable evening with the people who have supported me throughout my career.

“Prepare for a night of extraordinary entertainment, where dreams will soar, and inspiration will know no bounds.”

Born in Mexborough in 1936, the son of a coal miner, Brian embarked on a remarkable journey from a mining village to becoming one of the nation’s most recognisable actors.

From his start as a youngster at Mexborough Theatre Guild, Brian went on to train at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, before landing starring roles in shows and films ranging from  Blackadder, Flash Gordon, and I, Claudius.

He also conquered Mount Everest three times and made expeditions through  the untamed jungles of Venezuela.

Craig, managing director of the Reyt Good Events, said: “This homecoming celebration is a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and the unwavering support of a community.

“Mexborough is in for an extraordinary night that will leave a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to attend.”

Historian Giles said he was thrilled to be involved, adding: “Brian’s immense talent and larger-than-life personality have always inspired us, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome him back to where it all began.”
