Wickersley off to a flier

WICKERSLEY made a storming start to the news South Yorkshire Senior League Championship.

They piled on 366-9 at Northfield Lane against Houghton Main  despite having to hit the panic button after losing their first three wickets for just eight runs!

Wickersley batted first but were quickly in trouble before new skipper Jordan Lowe joined newcomer Kamran Ajmal to add 138 for the fourth wicket. Lowe was out for 76, including 11 fours and three sixes.

Michael Donson came in to liven up proceedings with 66 in 31 balls and a boundary account of nine fours and four sixes. Ajmal was dismissed on 84 but, underlining Wickersley’s depth, South African Johan Bothma kept up the run rate with 78 from 51 balls.

With youngster Edward Ellis scoring 39, Wickersley racked up the highest total of the day,depite the best efforts of Australian Liam Rigby, who claimed 4-117 in his first taste of South Yorkshire action.

Rigby also showed he could bat and provided the highlight of the Houghton Main innings with 80, including ten fours and four sixes.

The visitors innings eventually closed at 188 all out. Wickersley's Elsecar recruit, Iftikhar  Afzal claimed 3-41 and Haider Jahangir took 4-21.
