Whitley Hall back on top

WHITLEY Hall returned to the top of the Ben Bailey Homes South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League Premier Division after easily beating Barnsley B at Shaw Lane.

An opening partnership of 71 between Alec Welsh and Jim Tasker laid the foundation for a score of 233 for 5. Alec Welsh hit 35 while Jim Tasker was out one short of a half century.

Jaco Castle knocked up a swift 67 runs with eight fours and a six in a partnership of 99 with Alex Fletcher, who was the last man to leave with his score on 45.

Barnsley's second wicket added 94, with Jordan Bethel contributing 33 and Jake Malkin 64, but there was little else after their departure and at the close Barnsley were 134 for 7. Alex Welsh was Whitley's leading bowler with four for 42.

Despite posting 254 for the loss of seven wickets, Whiston PC succumbed to Wath who knocked off the runs for the loss of only four wickets.

An opening stand of 49 by Andy Tomlinson (26) and Scott Jones (32) led the way, Steve Taylor's 30 pushing the score on, but it was a fifth wicket stand of 84 between Sohail Awan and Pete Wilson that boosted Whiston’s score. Awan hit a fine 75 and Wilson 44. A late unbeaten flurry from Paul Fenn (23) took Whiston to 254 for 7. Lesroy Weekes took four for 53 for Wath.

James Barnard and Vinay Devishetty laid a terrific platform for Wath to dominate the match, the first wicket yielding 148 with Sri-Lankan Devishetty hitting 92 from 96 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. Barnard continued on patiently, departing on 68 after support from Weekes (20).

With 50 runs needed from the last ten overs, Whiston were denied by unbeaten knocks from Archie Ogden (30) and Rob Barlow (21) as Wath passed the total with nine balls to spare.
