Survival for Parkgate FC as stressful season ends on a high

PARKGATE pulled off a final-night victory to avoid relegation from the Northern Counties East League after an epic season.

The Steelmen beat Dronfield Town 2-1 at rain-lashed Roundwood to pull themselves clear of the bottom three.

Ahmed Tahar's early opener was cancelled out by the visitors early in the second half before Josh Nodder's swift left-footed finish decided it in front of more than 200 spectators.

It was Parkgate's third win from the last five.

Manager Scott Mason said: "The conditions were horrible. They levelled the game out.

"It was one of those nights, a tough night, and at the end I had a few tears in my eyes. It's been that stressful."

While sad the victory could lead to the relegation of near neighbours Swallownest, who play their final match at home to Brigg Town tonight, Mason is relieved Gate can properly plan for NCEL football again next term.

Managerial upheavals at the start of this season had left the club short of players.

Scott also thanked chairman Albert Dudill and secretary Bruce Bickerdike for sticking with him and president and main sponsor Gino Maccio from JBM Metal Recycling.

The manager added: "As a team we've had our ups and downs but the lads have been brilliant and I'd like to thank everyone who played their part, no matter how big or small."
