Rotherham Olympic torch route unveiled

ROTHERHAM is set for Olympic fever when the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay passes through in June next year.

OLYMPIC fever could grip the town when the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay passes through in June next year.

Torchbearers will carry the flame through the town on June 26 next year as part of its 70-day journey around the UK ahead of next summer’s games.

It will travel through Rotherham, Templeborough, Dalton, Thrybergh and Conisbrough during its passage through South Yorkshire.

Rotherham Borough Council leader, Cllr Roger Stone, was among those celebrating the announcement at Clifton Community Arts School this morning.

Around 8,000 people will carry the Olympic Torch on its journey around the UK.

Rotherham’s Dominic Hurley (38) and Paul Bennington (39) are currently in the running to complete the Rotherham leg after reaching the latter stages of the nomination process.

The final decision will be revealed in December.

Dominic, of Dalton, has defied doctors declarations that he would never walk again after suffering a severe brain injury 16 years ago and spending three months in a coma.

He has proved the doubters wrong and in the last three years has raised £53,000 for charity through his love of cycling.

Paul, of Brampton Bierlow, is a triathlete who has helped set up and maintain facilities at Manvers Lake and was central to the recent launches of the Dearne Valley Triathlon and South Yorkshire half marathon.
