Revell double lifts Millers

ROTHERHAM United notched a comfortable 3-1 victory in their final pre-season friendly away to Evo-Stik League outfit AFC Stamford last night, with Alex Revell netting twice.

Assistant manager Paul Raynor took charge of the team as boss Steve Evans watched Saturday’s opponents Hull City in action, naming a mix of youth and experience in his starting line-up.

The Millers took the lead inside the opening two minutes when new signing Keiran Agard scored a fine solo effort, picking the ball up on the right-hand side of the area penalty before cutting inside on his left foot and firing in to the bottom corner.

That was the only goal of the first half but it wasn’t long after the break when the lead was doubled. Agard again did well before he was tripped in the area, allowing Revell to step up and stroke in the resulting penalty.

Stamford did pull a goal back when winger Jordan Smith burst down the right and set up substitute Jake Gibson to score with his first touch of the game.

However it was the Millers who finished the stronger and Revell bagged his second of the night with a close-range header after Stamford ‘keeper Richard Stacey couldn’t hold on to a shot by Alec Denton.

The Millers visit Hull City in the Capital One Cup on Saturday before their kicking off their League Two campaign at home to Burton Albion on August 18.
