Premier League 2 on horizon, says Millers chief

ROTHERHAM United chief Steve Evans believes English football is heading for a radical change – and wants the club to be part of the top strata.

The second tier is becoming awash with so much money and big-city clubs at the top end that many – including Evans – believe it is only a matter of time before it is re-branded Premier League 2.

That could have connotations for smaller teams like Rotherham, who are finding it harder and harder to compete with rivals backed by Premier League parachute payments running into the multi millions.

For the lucky ones included in any new set-up, the even more lucrative rewards would open up new possibilities.

Evans wants the Millers to forge a lasting future in the Championship and be part of any future new order, although he says there may be calls for lesser lights to be excluded.

He told the Advertiser: “The Championship is getting to the stage, with the number of big city clubs in it, that people within the game believe it is only a matter of time before it's a Premier League 2.

“There will be the usual calls for certain clubs to be included based upon the size of fan base but there is an integrity behind the administration of English football and hopefully inclusion will be based upon what goes on on the pitch.

“Next year another couple of million pounds will be going to each Championship club, therefore it’s more essential to stay in  because we can work miracles with that funding."
