Morning starts for cricket?

THE South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League could allow earlier start times next season to combat the affects of the weather.

Knowing rain was forecast for later in the day, Wath began their match with Hallam at Moor Road earlier last Saturday morning by mutual agreement.

Showers still caused an abandonment but morning starts are among the proposed changes on the table for 2017 as part of the ECB's new Get the Game on intitiative.

Local cricket chief Terry Bentham said: “If the forecast is for rain late in the afternoon, what is the point of starting at 1pm?

“We are looking at giving clubs permission to start early next year and it's an idea backed by the ECB.”
