Millers look to push on

MANAGER Steve Evans sees reasons for optimism as Rotherham United prepare to tackle a tough away assignment this weekend.

Without a win in seven following Saturday's frustrating 1-1 home draw with rock bottom Blackpool, they make the long trip to Cardiff needing points to pull away from the foot of the Championship.

Saturday's point nudged the Millers out of the bottom three and they would have had all three but for a goalkeeping howler five minutes from time.

Adam Collin's misskick gifted Blackpool substitute Steve Davies an equaliser, just minutes after Jordan Bowery had struck at the other end.

However Evans, who changed more than half the team for the game and handed debuts to new boys Reece James, Scott Wootton and Tom Lawrence, reckons the football his side produced in the first half showed what they are capable of.

“The first 20 minutes was quite special from a Rotherham United team and if we turned round 3-0 up I don't think anyone on the Blackpool bench would have complained,” he said.

“We just didn't get the goal then and if we had I believe we would have put them to bed before half time.

“But when you get in front, you have to see games out and you just can't make mistakes like that. While it was a huge error, the ball shouldn't have got to the goalkeeper in the first place because our captain, Craig Morgan, should have dealt with it. It's all about fine margins but if we play as well for the rest of the season as we did in the first half then I'll take what comes.”

Next comes a tussle with a Cardiff side who have improved since Russell Slade took over as manager in October and are now up to eighth. They also have former Millers sharp shooter Adam Le Fondre in their ranks.

Rotherham will be chasing their first away win since a 1-0 victory at Millwall in August.
