Millers beat transfer record

STRIKER Jordan Bowery has joined Rotherham United for a club record fee.

The striker penned a two-year deal from Aston Villa and in doing so enters the history books as the Millers' record signing, easily beating the £160,000 paid for Lee Frecklington last year.

Delighted manager Steve Evans confirmed the club had to work hard to secure the former Chesterfield hit-man's signature.

He said: "We have been very patient on this deal and again we are thankful to the chairman in providing the funds. Thankfully we were able to persuade Jordan that his future lies in Rotherham.

"I am also grateful to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa for the kind words he said about Rotherham United and we are just delighted to have got the deal over the line."

After beginning his career at Chesterfield, Bowery caught the eye of the Premier League giants who signed him two years ago for £500,000.

The front-man enjoyed a run in the Villa side towards the end of last season and also had a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers.

Evans added: "He excited everyone when he was at Chesterfield when he broke through as a young kid and then he got the wonderful opportunity to play at Aston Villa. He has been at two good clubs and he has the opportunity to join one that is desperately keen to do well in The Championship."

Bowery becomes Rotherham's fifth summer signing, joining midfielder Conor Newton, striker Matt Derbyshire, goalkeeper Scott Loach and experienced Scottish defender Kirk Broadfoot, who signed this week.
