Manager backs misfiring Parkgate FC to come good

MANAGER Scott Mason is urging Parkgate to start nailing their chances as the club gears up for two big relegation battles near the foot of the Northern Counties East League.

Back-to-back away defeats to Selby and Armthorpe have dragged the Steelmen back towards the drop zone and they will fall back into it should they lose at home to third-bottom Glasshoughton Welfare tomorrow.

Encouragement for Mason comes in the number of chances his team are making, not least in last weekend's 2-0 loss at Armthorpe when they were undone by an own goal late in the first half and a second goal in the 90th minute.

The defeats have still upped the pressure on a re-shaped Parkgate side who also welcome bottom-of-the-table Athersley Rec to Roundwood next Wednesday (7.45pm).

“You have to be 'on it' every game. No-one is going to give you the points,” said Mason.

“We were good on Saturday. We had enough chances to win a number of games and that's how we've been the last few weeks.

“We've had loads of chances, goalkeepers winning Man of the Match awards and opportunities just not being put away.

“I guess when you're up at the top they go in and when you're down at the bottom they don't.

“If you don't take your chances you don't score goals and win games, simple as.”

Glasshoughton arrive having won three on the spin, completed by a 1-0 in another bottom-end scrap at Swallownest last Saturday.

“When we beat Glasshoughton earlier in the season at their place it was tough,” said Scott.

“They play good football and if they put it together like they have the last three games then we are going to be up against it.

“We just have to set out to do what we want to do.”

Gate have lost the experienced Danny Patterson to suspension but such is the strength of the group of players stitched together over recent months, there are good back-ups.

The boss is confident the corner can be turned.

“We have ten games left — seven at home and three away,” he added. “We've some of the top teams left to play but we've proved we can compete against them and we've beaten two of them.

“The lads are a little bit frustrated because we were doing pretty well and then had two games where we could have got results but didn't. We just need to bounce back now and get on another run. The players are all good enough and trust what we're trying to do.

“I'm not here to have a relegation on my hands. I said that from the start. You will see us come good.”

Kick-off tomorrow is 3pm.
