Kirwan makes explosive debut

ROOKIE Carl Kirwan burst onto the first team scene with a terrific debut—scoring two tries and having a big hand in two others as Moseley were put to the sword.

And the 20-year-old Teessider will have given Andre Bester a pleasant headache on the eve of tomorrow’s clash with Bristol.

Kirwan, signed from Middlesbrough, is another of the unknowns unearthed by the Titans coach who looks a good future prospect.

But as Sean Dougall returns from illness, Bester has to decide whether to bring his skipper back immediately of give Kirwan another run.

It seems certain that he’ll opt for the latter, but if Kirwan keeps up the form he showed at Billesley Common there’s every chance that he’ll push Dougall all the way for a start role as the season progresses.

And with Rotherham’s bench having been so effective this term, he will at the least bring more strength to the squad.

Kirwan was delighted to have been given his big chance in the 36-8 win.

He said: “I’ve played a few games for the A team which, to be honest, haven’t gone very well, but I’ve stuck at it in training. "
