IAM steer Rotherham riders towards new skills

MOTORCYCLE riders in Rotherham are amassing an array of new road-craft skills thanks to a training course being offered at a cut-price rate.

Rotherham Advanced Motorcyclists (RAM) and Sheffield Advanced Motorcyclists (SAM) have both been working with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership to offer riders in the county the opportunity to complete the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists (IAM) Skill for Life course.

The course is being offered at £79 instead of the usual £149 thanks to a subsidy served up by the partnership and equips riders with the skills to be a better rider.

The qualification can also lower riders’ insurance premiums.

During 2014 and 2015 a total of 49 RAM and SAM members pass Skill for Life.

Tony Thompson from SAM said: "The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) has supported advanced rider training in South Yorkshire since 2011/12 when a pilot scheme was run to subsidise the IAM's Skill for Life programme."

Owen Wright from RAM added, "A subsidy equivalent to half the cost has been provided to encourage South Yorkshire riders to improve their riding skills.  With the support of the SYSRP and since this subsidy began, RAM and SAM have guided over 120 local riders to complete the programme and receive the IAM's coveted green badge."
