Goodison realigns sights on Olympics

PAUL Goodison witnessed his chief Olympic rival storm to gold at the ISAF Sailing World Championships as he finished fifth - but is adamant that won't be the case next time around.

The 34-year-old travelled Down Under having not long been officially confirmed as Britain's sole representative in the Laser for London 2012 and therefore with a different focus to others.

Meanwhile, Australian reigning champion Tom Slingsby made it very clear that he was in Fremantle for nothing but gold and duly delivered it as Goodison's own bid tailed off in the latter stages.

Second up until the final two qualifying races on Saturday Goodison fell to sixth ahead of the medal race a day later but finished fifth in it to jump to the same position overall.

Goodison won't have to wait long to get his own back on Slingsby with the next World Championships in May, little over two months before London 2012, and he insists results there will matter.

"As you can see Tom was pretty fast and that is one of the major issues we are looking to address if were are going to win gold at London 2012," said Skandia Team GBR sailor Goodison.
