MANAGER Matt Taylor is warning Rotherham United supporters they may have to wait for new faces to arrive as the club look to strengthen their squad for a second season in the Championship.

The Millers have been busy compiling their wanted list as they’ve secured their second-tier status for the first time in seven years.

However, an influx of signings that will give them a chance to establish a long-term foothold in the division isn’t expected until late next month.

“We do our retained list in May but not too much happens in terms of the recruitment drive,” the boss said. “We ask the fans to be patient because it is not until the end of June that things start hotting up.”

Rotherham want to add Championship-proven players to their numbers and chairman Tony Stewart is ready to spend again after seeing his significant financial outlay in the January transfer window play a big part in keeping them up.

Taylor is grateful for the backing but acknowledges the Millers still face stiff competition for some of their targets.

“We’ll find out where we are in the food chain,” he said.

The manager is prepared to let some of his contracted players leave and has held meetings with them to inform them that their names are being circulated to other teams. “We have to generate money from the existing squad,” he said.

The 41-year-old plans to step up one-to-one talks with potential recruits after he has taken a holiday with his family in America.

Taylor took the hot-seat only in October and says he can sense a growing connection between him and the Millers following the successful pursuit of second-tier safety.

People are starting to trust me a little bit more throughout the club — players, staff behind the scenes and fans,” he said. “I am really clear about the direction in which I want us to go.

“Now there will be investment into a group of players that can compete.”
