THE roar from the crowd at the final whistle said it, so did the raised arms of the warriors in red and white ... Rotherham United are staying up.

The Millers lost two players to injury but in a magnificent display in the last AESSEAL New York Stadium fixture of a long, arduous campaign they sealed their Championship survival by beating opposition who will fight for a place in the Premier League in the play-offs.

When it mattered, Matt Taylor's men stood up. Hakeem Odoffin's goal just after the interval was the difference between the two sides and now it's party time at Wigan Athletic when an epic nine-month battle comes to a close next Monday.

Rotherham, after three failed attempts to remain in the division, climbed a place to 19th in the table. Far more importantly, they moved five points clear of third-bottom Reading with only one match left to play.

Richard Wood was playing probably his last game at New York after nine seasons with the club and stopped the Millers going behind in the seventh minute.

The skipper was initially beaten to the ball by Riley McGree but got back to clear off the line after the Boro man had dinked the ball over goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.

Dan Barlaser spent more than three seasons gracing the New York pitch in Millers colours and was back on his old stamping ground for the first time since joining the visitors in January.

There was nothing of his usual culture about his block on Ollie Rathbone but it was vital as it prevented Rotherham having their first effort on target.

Ogbene, on his 26th birthday, limped out of proceedings on 19 minutes with what looked like a hamstring issue. The winger had been racing away with the ball despite being tripped by Hayden Hackney when he suddenly fell to the turf.

Yellow card for the Boro player, afternoon and probably season over for the Millers' most potent attacking threat.

New York was a virtual sell-out and, with so much at stake for the home team, there was a feverish atmosphere inside the stadium.

Boro wanted a penalty when Chuba Akpom tumbled in the area under a challenge from Cohen Bramall. Not given. Rotherham wanted one for handball when Jordan Hugill, playing against his hometown club, tangled with Hackney. Same outcome.

Middlesbrough, with McGree picking pockets of space just behind the front two, were a threat but so were the Millers and the half-hour mark came and went with neither side gaining the upper hand.

Rotherham had been forced into two changes, with Odoffin and Shane  Ferguson  coming in for Lee Peltier and midfielder Conor Coventry who were out with hamstring problems.

The home outfit have been ravaged by injuries all season and their curse struck yet again as Ferguson joined Ogbene on the sidelines before the break. Ben Wiles, just back after ankle surgery, entered the fray.

The Millers received a big boost on the stroke of half-time when Anfernee Dijksteel saw red and left the visitors facing the second half with ten men.

The right-back was sent off for preventing Hugill going clean through on the edge of the box. Bramall had the chance to rub salt in Boro's wounds from the free-kick but lifted it over the bar.

Middlesbrough responded by taking over a striker, Cameron Archer, at the interval and bringing on a defender, Tommy Smith.

It took Rotherham only three minutes of the second period to make the most of their numerical advantage as Odoffin fired them into the lead. The midfielder took aim from 20 yards and sent a superb strike speeding beyond keeper Zack Steffen in front of the North Stand.

The Millers knew they would never have a better chance of securing their safety and were fighting for everything.

Barlaser did his former teammates a favour by firing high and wide from distance and Smith blazed over at the back post as the contest slipped into its final half an hour.

Boro's Darragh Lenihan should have walked for a foul on substitute Georgie Kelly but the referee didn't even award a free-kick. Keith Stroud evened things up by waving away appeals for what looked like a stonewall spot-kick at the other end when Cameron Humphreys felled Isaiah Jones.

The clocked ticked down ...

On 90 minutes, hearts were in mouths as Marc Bola's cross deflected off Jamie Lindsay but Johansson got across his goal to make the save.
