A NEW centre-forward is the priority target for Rotherham United as they seek to  put the finishing touches to their Championship squad before the close of the transfer window at the end of this month.

Manager Matt Taylor would like to tackle this season with a six-strong strikeforce and is focused on bringing in one more frontman. “Offers are out,” he confirmed. “It's not imminent but we are trying our utmost.”

So far, the Millers' central attacking options are Jordan Hugill, Georgie Kelly, Andre Green, Josh Kayode and Tom Eaves.

Taylor believes more players will become available now that EFL clubs have returned to league action and have this week taken part in the first round of the Carabao Cup. He said: “Maybe some teams will now say: ‘We're knocked out, we don't need such squad depth.’”

To free up room for arrivals, Taylor is prepared to let some of his fringe men leave AESSEAL New York Stadium on temporary deals.

Speaking after the cup win over Morecambe on Tuesday, he said: “A couple of lads involved tonight may be available for loans which might happen sooner rather than later. We have to free up some finance within our own squad.”
