ROTHERHAM United's injury woes worsened as they went down to high-flying Norwich City despite a brave performance in today's Championship clash at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Millers, already heavily depleted as they headed into the game, lost strikers Conor Washington and Georgie Kelly and centre-half Grant Hall during the course of the contest.

They showed real character to level matters at the start of the second half through Ollie Rathbone but it took the Canaries less than a minute to regain a lead they managed to hold until the final whistle.

Rotherham pressed constantly in search of a second equaliser but couldn't find a way through the yellow wall.

They started brightly against a side that had been in the Premier League last season and almost took a sixth-minute lead.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy crossed deep from the left and Peter Kioso, seeing his first action since August, clipped the back post with a volley.

Four minutes later, Dan Barlaser's cute pass played in Ollie Rathbone who sent his shot across goal and just wide.

However, the home team fell behind on 17 minutes when Teemu Pukki's cross deflected into the air off Norton-Cuffy towards the far post where Kenny McLean was lurking to send a header looping into the net.

It was a bad omen as the Millers went into the contest having never taken a point this season after conceding the opening goal.

This was a Remembrance Day fixture and, before kick-off, The Last Post had been played by bugler followed by an immaculately-observed minute's silence.

Washington departed early and Kelly entered the fray in his place.

Neither side had been threatening to score for a while but that changed within seconds of the substitute's introduction as he headed the ball back across goal into the danger zone where Isaac Hayden's desperate intervention prevented Wes Harding levelling proceedings.

The injury jinx struck again and Kelly lasted only eight minutes before pulling up and having to be replaced by Chiedozie Ogbene.

A strong hand just before half-time from visiting goalkeeper diverted Norton-Cuffy's cross away from the waiting Kioso as Rotherham fought for an equaliser.

With the Millers missing three wing-backs - Cohen Bramall because of a one-game ban and Shane Ferguson and Tolaji Bola through injury - summer signing Kioso came in for a first league start after finally putting groin and ankle issues behind him.

There was a place in midfield for Jamie Lindsay as Ben Wiles was pushed forward into a 'number 10' role.

It looked an uphill task for Matt Taylor's men to fight their way back into the match but within four minutes of the restart they were level.

Rathbone picked off a stray pass, ran in on goal and planted the ball into the bottom corner in front of the kop from 20 yards.

The cheers had still to die down when Norwich went straight down to the other end and restored their advantage.

Viktor Johansson parried a deflected shot, Rotherham failed to clear and Aaron Ramsey slotted home.

Soon after, Hall became third home player unable to continue.

Johansson kept the Millers' hopes alive on the hour mark, saving crucially when Josh Sargent was freed by Gabriel Sara's pass and took aim from inside the box.

The Millers' big chance came on 74 minutes when the net opened up for Wiles only for Max Aarons to get in a superb block on the goalbound shot.

In the 89th minute, Ogbene tumbled at full speed in the box and was furious to be booked for diving as three sides of New York screamed for a penalty.

Then, in the last few seconds, the same player was a whisker away with a low, driven shot.

Defeat left Rotherham in 17th place, just two points above the drop zone, but there had been much to admire in their performance.
