MATCHDAY CENTRE: No hiding place for Millers

THERE really is no hiding place for the Millers at the moment.

Rock bottom of the Championship, beaten five times on the spin and now the holders of an unwanted record as well.

Opening a season with six successive away defeats for the first time in their 90 years as Rotherham United is one statistic to try and forget, and you have to go back another five to their previous incarnation as Rotherham County to find the last time a similar bout of travel sickness struck so soon.

The Millers have shipped 19 goals in that run so far, barely giving themselves a chance of a clean sheet, never mind a point.

The players are putting it in for their manager and and as against Huddersfield and Newcastle, they made superior opponents sweat for the points.

JON TAYLOR'S SHOT HIT THE BACK OF THE NET, BUT WAS RULED OUT FOR OFFSIDE

The fact remains that there is still a deep-seated fragility about Alan Stubbs' side and even though it can partly be excused when the opposition is as good as as it has been lately, better will be expected when lesser opponents finally come into view.

Stubbs admitted slick, confident Norwich City were the better side on Saturday, he could hardly say anything else.

There was the consolation of a first goal in Rotherham colours for Dexter Blackstock and then a little spell towards the end when the Canaries didn't look so comfortable on their perch.

Apart from that it was a story of wave after wave of yellow attacks, Norwich showing the attacking swagger and intent of a team who aren't going to hang around in the Championship for long.

Wes Hoolahan was superb for them, tying young Dael Fry in knots with some dazzling footwork for their first goal on 17 minutes.

Only a combination of wayward finishing and stoic defending kept them waiting for their second goal just past the hour, clipped in by Cameron Jerome from Hoolahan's feed after Rotherham, not for the first time this season, spurned several chances to clear.

The offside flag that chalked off an immediate reply from Jon Taylor was typical of the bad luck that hits teams at the bottom.

With so many of Rotherham's attack-minded players unable to impose themselves, substitute Blackstock pressed his claims for a start at Birmingham tomorrow night when he finished off a cross from the impressive Darnell Fisher with 16 minutes to go.

Stubbs' battlers still couldn't escape City's stranglehold and sub Steven Naismith's late tap-in ensured a more realistic scoreline and left the teams at opposite ends of the table.
