INJURY victim Ben Wiles has been given an added incentive to return to the first-team fold before the end of the season by Rotherham United’s business in the New Year transfer window.

The midfielder is restricted to a watching brief as he recovers from ankle damage suffered in the Boxing Day draw against Stoke City.

He’s been so impressed by January arrivals such as Tariqe Fosu, Leo Hjelde, Conor Coventry and Jordan Hugill that he can’t wait to rub shoulders with them on the pitch.

“It would be a joy to play alongside some of the new lads,” he said.

Wiles is midway through his rehabilitation following surgery and the signs are promising that he will be back in Matt Taylor’s squad before the May 8 close of the Millers’ Championship campaign.

“My hope is to try and make a couple of games — obviously when the lads have guaranteed safety in the division!” he said.

The 23-year-old is working hard in the gym and on the exercise bike at the club’s Roundwood base before being allowed to gradually step up his recovery out on the grass.

Medical staff have given him an indication that he’s on course for a second-tier comeback at the end of April if there are no setbacks.

Wiles’ fitness record was so good that until his misfortune against the Potters he had been available for every league match for three years.

He admits the first serious injury of his career has left him feeling low at times.

“I’m new to spending this much time off the pitch,” he said. “It’s difficult to take. I’ve just got to focus on getting back and then into the team when that time comes.

“I try to stay positive. I have good and bad days.”
